Reality Leads Fantasy - Celebrating Women of Color in Flight will be held October 6-7, 2006 in Chicago—the hometown of Dr. Mae Jemison, Nichelle Nichols and Bessie Coleman. The star-studded celebration will feature African American, Asian, Latin and Hispanic, Indian, Native American and African women involved in all aspects of aviation and aerospace.

The celebration begins with Rising Up as aviators and aerospace pioneers visit area schools to bring aerospace and aviation careers and rewards to life for students with a simultaneous international webcast that will bring this opportunity to every corner of the globe. Next, Festival of Flight—Reality and Fantasy puts reality to the asphalt as women aircrews and others fly into and staff static aircraft displays and festival, an event open to the public. Then join Nichelle, Dr. Mae, Harvard History Professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates, world-renown sculptor Ms. Tina Allen –who is designing the commemorative – and other aviation and aerospace pioneers of reality of fact and fantasy at the culminating Reality Leads Fantasy Gala. The evening showcases dynamic original video, live entertainment and personalities sharing their unique perspectives on the past, present and future of flight and space.

Proceeds will support the non-profit Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence’s (DJF) science literacy program The Earth We Share™ (TEWS) international science camp that brings students together from around the world and throughout the United States, builds problem solving and critical thinking skills that will be needed in all walks of life and trains school teachers in experiential education.
